RISE Podcast Series: Episode 2 With Maria D'Mello

Christchurch Women's Club member Maria D'Mello recounts her story of survival when civil war broke out in Indonesia following the 1999 referendum and the role that communication played in it.

This is newsletter #2 for the RISE Podcast Series, which aims to highlight the stories of Toastmasters in the South Island and Wellington region and the impact Toastmasters has had on their lives.

This week’s story comes from Maria D’Mello (pictured). Maria grew up in Indonesia and lived through the civil war that erupted following the 1999 referendum.

In this episode she recounts her harrowing story of survival, the role that communication played in her job as a UN interpreter and as a fellow human being seeking to survive, and her pick of the Toastmaster values.

The podcast series is getting better incrementally and that’s part of the ethos of Toastmasters.

In this episode we used a gimbal and wireless mics. Using the gimbal was a technical challenge but Reuben Painter our cameraman did a pretty good job. The mics did pick up some noise too.

Maria’s 11-year-old son Moses also helped out. Thanks to you all. It was a team effort. That said, send constructive feedback and story suggestions to me at prm.d72@toastmasters.org.nz or comment below.
